CALL PROGRAM ASSESMENT

In this paper I would try to analyze the four CDs tutorial such as Talk Now for the Beginners level, Talk More! for Intermediate level, Vocabulary, and English words. These four CDs tutorial are the implementation of the CALL Program, which have been designed as media in Language Teaching and Learning. Learning Language assisted by the Computer helps the students to learn easily and can repeat it more than one time. To analyze CALL program must be based on the following principles namely: interactivity (feedback and instruction), Usability (flexibility), Content Appropriateness, Effectiveness, as well as Performance (attractiveness). Here are my analyzations of the four CDs tutorial:
A. Learn English (Talk Now for Beginners level)
The Learn English CD is CD tutorial for beginners that make the users learn how to speak in English from Basic English. The CD gives many example of vocabularies and uttarances. It also provides some languages in the world. So everybody in the world can understand and use it easily.

1. Interactivity (feedback and instruction)
When the first time I open the CD, the lay out is very attractive and colorful. There are also the motion persons that they seem watch and guide us and wait for the answers. The instructions are also very clear, so the users can follow it well. The steps of the CD are very good, it shows the users have serious to follow the steps. It makes students to be active not only listening but also speaking. It is very helpful to learn pronunciation so that students or users could pronounce well. The CD is very interactive to make students learn the lesson.

2. Usability (flexibility)
To use the CD is very easy. First, the users have to install the program in their computer and follow the steps. The users don’t have to install the program if they want; they just click the icon start. After that, the users can choose the language about how to operate the CD. Then, the users can play it. They can choose the topic of the lesson. There are also the corrections of the answer if their answers are wrong. The children and adult can use the CD. So, every age can learn the English lesson from the CD. Every country can use the CD because it provides some languages in it.

3. Content Appropriateness
The content of the CD program is very good to learn English and it is very appropriate for the students. The CD gives some lesson how to pronounce well by imitating the native speakers before they do some exercises. So the students can understand about the lesson, especially to pronounce and to use the language. It concerns to listening comprehension and speaking ability.

4. Effectiveness
For the users perhaps that they have to prepare the head set with the microphone besides the computer unit so that they can operate and play the CD easily. It is better for children to learn English from the CD because it helps them to know English since beginning.

5. Performance (attractiveness)
The lay out of the CD is colorful and the design is pretty good. There is no error in every quiz. It has clear instructions and it is very easy to operate so for those who not used to run the CD. They can operate it well.

B. Speak English (Talk More! for Intermediate level)
The Speak English CD is the CD tutorial that helps the students knows about daily expressions in English. So in the end of the lesson the students are able to communicate using English in proper way.

1. Interactivity (feedback and instruction)
The CD is more interactive than the Talk Now! Because there are some dialogues between two persons and it teach how to communicate with English. The CD gives the students some expressions how to greet people and how to respond it. So the students might follow how the persons in the CD speak some utterances clearly.

2. Usability(flexibility)
This CD is referred to the students who want to learn how to communicate in daily use. There are some basic utterances that used to in daily life, for example the dialogues when greet people at the first time or meet a friend. These are very useful for students to communicate using the expressions in everyday.

3. Content Appropriateness
The content is very appropriate with the title that asks the student to talk more and confident to use the expressions. There are some dialogues and played by some native speakers so that the users or the students could imitate the expressions clearly and easily, actually it contains of basic speaking skill. It is for listening comprehension and speaking ability. The CD is suitable for every age, and the intermediate level.

4. Effectiveness
The topics in the CD are very meaningful for the students so they can practice with their friends. The dialogues and the expressions are common in daily life so they are very effective to learn for the student who use the CD and for the teacher who needs that kind of media. Same with the CD before, it needs another device which is head set with the microphone.

5. Performance (attractiveness)
The lay outs are very colorful and interesting. The design is nice and soft. There is no error when we use the CD. The users will not be confused to choose the topics and how to play the CD because it is very easy to understand the instructions from the screen. There are real pictures and real situations so the students feel in the real situation as well which is very good for them.

C. Vocabulary
The vocabulary CD is the CD tutorial that helps the students to improve their vocabulary in English. The exercises in the CD are quite hard so they have to read and learn about those new vocabularies in the CD before doing the quizzes. In the end of the lesson the students are able to use the vocabularies in their communication.

1. Interactivity (feedback and instruction)
The CD gives some quizzes according to the vocabulary levels that the users may choose freely. It is very interactive because the users have to be careful when choose the answer. If not the users will lose the chance, for example if the users use the Balloonz, they have to be careful when break the Balloon.

2. Usability (flexibility)
One of instruction in the CD is the users may choose the themes to play the quiz such as Balloons, Haunted House, Bats and Stuntman. The users should answer the quiz by choosing the suitable color; red, yellow, green or blue. The users need to find the words that have similar meaning with the vocabulary that have been asked. The CD makes us learn know more about vocabulary so it can enrich our vocabulary. The CD also gives us the certificate of result after we finish it.

3. Content Appropriateness
The CD is for advanced English level because the words that are used quite hard and uncommon words. The level of difficulties is medium to hard; the students need ability to improve their knowledge and vocabulary before they are doing these quizzes.

4. Effectiveness
The teacher must give explanation about the vocabularies that want to teach before the students do the quiz. It needs comprehension to answer the quizzes. The teachers have to guide and help them when they do the quizzes. So they will not confuse to use and answer the quizzes.

5. Performance (attractiveness)
The lay out is colorful and nice but the design is still rough and simple. The users feel play the same quiz because it has same design and the way to play it. It just has different themes to play for every topic of vocabulary.

D. English Words
The English word CD is the CD tutorial that helps the students to learn vocabularies through pictures. The quizzes will give the students some pictures but they have to choose the correct picture with the names that have been given. So in the end of the lesson, the students will familiar with the vocabularies when they see the pictures.

1. Interactivity(feedback and instruction)
The CD gives some quizzes according to the vocabulary levels that the users may choose easily. It is very interactive because the users have to be careful when choose the answer. If not the users will lose the chance, for example if the users use the Roadhog. They have to be careful when cross the street. If the car hit you or go into wrong hole and you will lose. There is also limit of time so don’t waste your time.

2. Usability (flexibility)
The way to play the CD is the same with the earlier. The instruction of the CD is the users may choose the themes to play the quiz such as Roadhog, Rescue, Night Search, and Frozen. The users should answer the quiz by choosing the suitable color; red, yellow, green or blue hole. The users need to find the picture that has similar meaning with the word that has been given. The CD makes us learn know more about vocabulary so it can improve our vocabulary. The CD also gives us the certificate of result after accomplishing it.

3. Content Appropriateness
The content of the lesson in this CD is appropriate for every age (child to adult). It is easier and more interesting than Vocabulary CD because the CD provides pictures in the quiz. However the pictures sometimes don’t clear enough so the players get confused with them. It is very good for children to use the CD to enhance new vocabulary especially basic vocabulary.

4. Effectiveness
The CD is actually modified game in learning English especially vocabulary. The students will be very motivated if the lesson is made through the game. Game is the only way to make students attracted following the lesson. However, too much game is not worthy; it will make them lazy and addicted.

5. Performance (attractiveness)
The design is still rough and simple. It is very interesting because it contains more pictures. However, there is an error with the picture in the middle of game. The programmer should be very careful with the miss. The users will enjoy the lesson if the program and the content are good as well as the performance.
