The Role of ICT inSecond Language Teaching and Learning Process

A.    Introduction

Recently, ICT (Information Communication Technology) had brought great development in every aspect of life, including education. It has become a major issue in education world. It has been used from preschool through to university that could facilitate students and teacher in teaching and learning process. The technology in this era has been grown up not only from the quality but also the efficiency. They are moving fast without any limit from every product.The need of technological innovation has brought the communication revolution and rapid development of technological application in teaching and learning. This technology made contribution on improving language communication in Indonesia. Every school has used the ICT to facilitate the teacher to teach the students in the classroom. Many kinds of application that they use in the classroom improved and enhanced the better lesson.

English as second language has been growth in this country since the language become a global language. Based on the issue, the need of ICT in language teaching and learning process is uncontrolled. The school provides ICT as media of teaching and learning especially to facilitate the second language teaching and learning process. ICT could improve the level of education in every country. The improvement in level of education probably causes by many new chances in the education field.

 B.  The Use of ICT in Second LanguageTeaching and Learning Process

ICT in general is defined as the technology that enhances the process of delivering information and information. It allows some applications in technology to develop the ICT in language and learning process.  Along with development of technology, sometimes ICT is closely related to the computer. If we talk about ICT actually we talk about computer and the associated programs (software), including multimedia. These two things are like two sides of a coinMaddison (1983). Moreover, ICT is a technology product contains of hardware and software that have been used to manage data / information and communicate. There are parts of ICT, such as technology, information and communication. So, ICT can also be called 3C which stands for Computers, Contents, and Communication.

Learning is to delivery information or knowledge to students. The success of achievement in learning isif the information or knowledge that has been delivered is able to be understood by the students. Furthermore, learning is delivery of information and activities that facilitates learners’ attainment of intended, specific learning goals. Besides that learning is also the arrangement of information and the environment to facilitate the teacher.

The connection learning and ICT involved these three categories, which are; learn ICT, learn through ICT, and learn using ICT.

  1. Learn ICT means face the ICT as a science or subject lesson. Learn ICT should master basic competency of ICT that is stated in ICT curriculum
  2. Learn through ICT means that by packing the material lesson in multimedia learning based on ICT
  3. Learn using ICT means ICT is used as a tool or a medium to learn the lesson.

According to the connection learning and ICT above, the use of ICT in second language teaching and learning process in at number three. Learn using ICT that it is used as a tool or medium to learn the language. Not only as a tool or a medium, ICT is more interactive aid compare with other media. Computers and language learning according to Kenning (1984):

“Computer can be utilized to enhance language learning, and can also be used to generate examples to illustrate certain operations, or to stimulate conversation.”

The effectiveness of ICT and Computer assisted language learning programs have significant differences in favor between computer for language learning and non computer language learning. It also stimulates learners’ language outcomes in conversational skill.

C.    Kinds of ICT in Second LanguageTeaching and Learning

The impact of communication and information technology or ICT development on language education has been widely irresistible. The kinds of product of ICT in language education are also increased. Computer including multimedia learning is every kind of things that are used to deliver lessons (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective), and could stimulate the thinking, feelings, attention and desire to study so that the learning process happens, reasonable, and controlled.

There are six components of media of learning, they are:

  1. Text
  2. Graphics
  3. Pictures
  4. Videos
  5. Sounds
  6. Animations / Simulations

These multimedia has characteristics, they are:

  1. Optimizing all of the media
  2. Interactive
  3. The control of  users
  4. Programmed

If those two or more media are combined to be one in multimedia program, so that it will be new strong character and powerful. These components could support the computer in teaching and learning process and become more interactive and effective. The multimedia program is a system that contains integrated any kinds of media – text, graphics, video, and audio – that used to delivery information by computer controlled.

Now we can find many products of ICT that facilitate the language teaching and learning process such as interactive CDs or software / application that can teachers use in their classroom as media of learning. There is also interactive whiteboard including computer and a data projector (i.e. you can present visual material, internet pages, etc. in a magnified way for everyone to see). There is internet which is the most popular product of ICT and it has so many users in all over the world. It is very effective and interactive tool in teaching and learning. Internet is source of global information that utilizes a set of computer networks as its media. It is also a global network that connects to millions of computers in the world, where computer connected to the internet could linkmany computers anytime, from everywherein the world to send news, to get information or transfer data.According to language learning and teaching process, many activities that can do using internet as media of learning such as students can access dictionaries on the web or online dictionaries, students can practice language on the internet because there are many websites that offer the course program, it also offer the students and teachers to have opportunities to compose material in some ways without using pencil, pen and papers.

D. The Advantage of ICT in Second Language Teaching and Learning

As we can see in the field the impact of the ICT in teaching and learning process especially in language education, there are some advantages in using ICT in second language teaching and learning. It has some benefits for teachers and students, they are:

  • Better learning and maintenance
  • Addresses different learning style and preferences
  • Effectiveness across learning domains
  • High degree of realism
  • Motivation
  • Interactivity
  • Individualization
  • Consistency
  • Learner control
  • Solving problems
  • Flexibility

According to the advantages above, there are so many benefit that we can get if we can apply the ICT in education especially in language education.  The education practitioners should concentrate and more serious in the ICT development so that the teachers can apply it in their classrooms. They have to focus on how the teachers and students could use the ICT to improve their ability in second language and in technology in the future.

E. The Disadvantage of ICT in Second LanguageTeaching and Learning

In every product of technology, there are also some errors that can be obstacle in teaching and learning process. They are called the disadvantage. The disadvantage of ICT in second language teaching and learning process which are:

  • Costly
  • Needs Lots of components or devices of hardware and software
  • Time
  • Need lot of experiment
  • If not designed properly, it cannot be interested, effective, and unfriendly.
  • Uncontrolled

According to these disadvantages, the education practitioners, teacher and students have to be aware and don’t be reckless in implementing the ICT in second language learning.

F.     Conclusion

The role of ICT in second teaching and learning process is very important for the future. English as a second language in this country and be a global language needs special consideration from the government, education practitioners, teachers and parents of students. The primary role of ICT in second language teaching and learning process is to facilitate the students to learn English in the classroom. To get their motivation and their attraction in learning the language so they feel comfortable and enjoyable in learning the language. If they get and have good facilities ICT in their school and their home, they will enrich and improve their ability to communicate in English fast. The teacher will be easy to teach them in the classroom. For teachers, they could increase their knowledge and information not only in language but also in technology. The teachers will be more creative and innovative in making media for teaching English. In brief, there are things that have to concern before using the ICT in the classroom even this media is important to have in our class.
